Twas the Night before….

I haven’t blogged in a while… busy, busy, busy…  but I got inspired the other night and started writing this poem and took the time today to finish it, so I thought I’d share it.

You gotta get up and write down those poems when they come to you even in the middle of the night, or they will NOT be in your brain in the morning, I’ve learned that the hard way.

Enjoy!  Merry Christmas!

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house,

The children are sleeping and I can’t find my spouse.

The stockings are still in the tote in the barn,

And I’m busy knitting with needle and yarn.

A scarf has been made in all pinks and the red,

For oldest child Abi to wrap round her sweet head.

This mama is making a new hat for the dad,

In green and off-white because that’s what I had

When out on the porch there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter.

Over the to the porch door I walk carefully,

You just never know when you’ll step in dog pee.

The cat had a piece of yarn, I see through the door,

He was wrestling it and now there was yarn on the floor.

And what to my wondering eyes did appear?

A mess of needles and yarn all tangled, I fear.

I shooed him away and picked things up right quick.

I needed to get back and make my knitting needles click.

As I picked up the yarn, I remembered all that was done,

And I smiled and laughed as I thought of each one:

A whale, a dolphin, a giraffe and elephant too!

A piggy, some goats, dog and sheep, just a few.

Some Frozen friends, a moose and a grumpy cat,

A Panda, a flamingo, and a Hello Kitty hat!

As leaves before the wild hurricane fly,

I scooped up that yarn, I’ve gotta finish, gotta try!

So back to the sofa, my tired body went,

I thought of all time knitting, I have spent.

And then, in a twinkling, I finished the last one.

My gifts for my family were finally done!

As I put down the needles and rolled up the yarn,

I picked up the needle for the ends to weave/darn.

I’ve made a sweater, with a scarf and a hat.

Back in October to New York to deliver that.

A bundle of Whos all packed in a box,

For a friend’s exchange – way better than socks.

All the gifts for the scouts!  What fun! How merry!

I love those girls and our troop here in Perry!

Two different cat hats, one with a pink bow,

The other one grumpy, you’ve seen the show

A hobbit, and Tumnus and also Reepicheep

I’ve got to finish up, I really need to go to sleep.

Some of this yarn has left fuzz on my belly,

I’ll just brush it off and turn off the telly.

Now to photograph this project and post it online.

A camera that works, is a Christmas dream of mine.

I brush my teeth and will soon head to bed,

With visions of knitting needles dancing in my head

I spoke to the cat, who had caused the extra work.

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk.

And a nagging feeling I need to make more,

As I ponder what projects everyone will adore.

I climb into bed, and push the cat out of the way,

In just a few hours it will be Christmas Day.

I close my eyes as the cat waddles out of sight,

“Happy Knitting to all, and to all a good night.”
